American 5ers came with a factory amp, unfortunately us mere Europeans had to settle for internal amplifier in the head unit. So american cars have it easy, all the speaker wires are sent to the boot of the car but in our cars they just go from back of the headunit to each speaker in a loom. So you'l have to either fit the amp in the dash(doubtful) or extend the speaker cables (not a good idea!) depending on how motivated you are, i think you have 2 options, a) get an aftermarket headunit for about 250 pound ( but that looks kinda crap cos its not original stereo) Or b) stick with your headunit and upgrade the speakers. Iv no idea how to install a line out converter. Have a butchers at the back of your headunit, so easy to take out. Thats what it looks like. As far as im aware (im not a genius on this) your only option as i said earlier, if you want to externally amplify a UK e39 radio, you gotta get an aftermarket unit. The US guys have it totally different to us so their stereo will have different headunits. You shouldnt feel too bad about it, my stereo is boloxed and iv only got one speaker working in mine. You can get the speakers upgraded in yours but you wont noticed much of a difference due to the weak amplification power of the headunit.
You only get out what you put in. I personally wouldnt fit a aftermarket stereo, cos i think it looks tacky, i did it on my e36 and i regretted it.

Iv never heard of a LOC but if it does what the guys say it does, theyl need it if they get an amp cos our european headunits have no other connections only for speakers.without a LOC u could only connect the output of the speakers from the stereo -->amp -->speakers but it would be pointless. The brand of stereo we have depends on the month of car, blaupunt,BECKER or whatever company is subbed out by bmw at the time. The speakers in all european e39s are NOKIA. Except for ones with expensive upgraded sound package as regard to the amp im not sure what you american guys got, but a quick search on ebay.com shows 'philips' as the standard e39 amp. A LOC (line output converter) takes the speaker output from the head unit and through either resistors or adjustable reostats and converters them to low level outputs, RCA. You'll need to cut the speakers in half coming from the head unit and connect them to the input of the LOC. From the LOC, you'll need to run RCA cords from there to the aftermarket amplifier.
